Jesus wept in sorrow

Jesus wept in sorrow

Jesus wept in sorrow when He saw the sadness of his friends at the death of Lazarus. Would He weep for our world today?

Hebrews 5: 7 While he lived on earth, anticipating death, Jesus cried out in pain and wept in sorrow as he offered up priestly prayers to God.

John 11:35 Jesus wept.

Only two times is it recorded in the bible that Jesus wept. In one instance He cried for his friend, the family, and for the misunderstanding they had. This was one He loved. The family was dear to Him. But when He cried, He felt deep in His heart the loss those around Him felt.

The book of Hebrews explains why Jesus wept explaining He knew what death would entail. He knew God would withdraw from Him and for the first time ever He would be separated from God’s love, joy, peace, and hope. The sorrow for those He loved here on this earth who needed His sacrifice drove him to tears. His care for God’s people was great and still is today.

I feel a part of the sorrow Jesus feels. Too many people are angry. They don’t think of other people in terms of individuals. A crowd is made of unique individuals with their hurts, sorrows, and needs. Groups of people, whether policemen, military, political, or religious groups, persons of color or not, these people are individuals. God loves every one of them. He hears their cries for help. And He sees their sorrows and their pain.

But He is sad because of their anger. He weeps because of their actions. Jesus says, “Come to me all you who are weary, I will give you rest.” Set down your anger and listen to God as He speaks to you. Do not lash out with violence.
